WhatsApp Introduces Tools to Curb Business Spam Messages
WhatsApp is set to provide users with long-awaited controls to stop business-related spam messages. Until now, users could only choose to receive such messages or block the business account entirely. Meta is now addressing this limitation, reports TechCrunch.
With over 200 million monthly users on the WhatsApp Business platform, many companies send promotional messages that some users perceive as spam. WhatsApp is testing new features allowing users to express preferences regarding business messages. Options like "Interested/Not Interested" and "Stop/Resume" will enable users to manage their preferences. For example, users can opt out of receiving “offers and announcements” while retaining the ability to reactivate them during special occasions.
Business messages have been categorized into four types: Marketing (offers and new products), Utility (order updates and account balances), Authentication (one-time passwords), and Service (customer support inquiries). Previously, users could not differentiate between these categories or customize their preferences.
Spam business messages are a significant concern, particularly in markets like India and Brazil, where WhatsApp serves as a primary communication tool. Unlike email platforms offering "unsubscribe" options for promotional messages, WhatsApp users lacked similar controls, leading to frustration.
Meta Vice President Nikila Srinivasan stated that businesses need to understand when their promotions do not meet user expectations. She emphasized that Meta is working to provide users with better control over their interactions.
Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced a daily limit on marketing messages, though the specific cap remains undisclosed.
Despite introducing features like Communities and Broadcast Channels, business messages still appear within the primary chat inbox without a separate tab. This integration highlights the challenge Meta faces in balancing its revenue growth—driven significantly by the WhatsApp Business platform, which earned $434 million in Q3—with maintaining user satisfaction.
By offering these new tools, WhatsApp aims to enhance user experience while supporting its revenue growth strategy in business messaging.
